Trust lands £500 donation from charitable golfers

CHARITABLE golfers have chipped in £500 towards the work of the David Shepherd Cricket Trust.

Tolchards, the Newton Abbot-based drinks wholesaler and sponsor of the Devon Cricket League and Devon CCC, holds a golf day for clients every year.

Teignmouth was the venue for this summer’s golf day out, which attracted a field of 18 teams of four.

Every team had the services of a professional golfer from the PGA West Region’s top-20 list of players.

Exeter-based accountancy firm Simpkins Edwards won the event, played to a best-two-scores-to-count format. Newquay pro Chris Gill was in their team.

The match was followed by dinner then an auction and raffle to raise money for charitable causes.

“We agreed beforehand any money raised would be divided equally between the captain’s charity at Teignmouth Golf Club and the David Shepherd Cricket Trust,” said Jim Mardell, the managing director of Tolchards.

“We were fortunate to have some great auction lots donated, including four tickets to a Rugby World Cup game at Exeter, a trip to a vineyard and a cricket bat signed by an England team that included Kevin Pietersen.”

The David Shepherd Cricket Trust is grateful to Tolchards for their donation.

Mark Ansell, the Trust chairman said “We are keen to support clubs to deliver youth coaching at all age groups and levels of ability, and donations like this really help us to do so.

“We also need more members and people taking part in our own events.”

The next event is their golf day on October 1at Churston Golf Club.
